What On Earth Is Functional Fitness?

There are many terms which fitness coaches use which the average person may not understand.  One of these terms is “functional fitness”.  Functional fitness refers to a form of fitness exercise which utilizes various muscle group in the upper and lower body at the same time.  One benefit of such exercise will be an increase of core stability and strength.

Functional fitness, in a nutshell, refers to exercise which improves your day-to-day activity.  Exercises involving squats, lunges, balance and stability and cardio often fall into the classification of “functional fitness”.  Other fitness aids such as TRX bands, Bosu balls and ab rollers are also excellent additions to any functional fitness program.

At the end of the day, your workout must correct, align and strengthen your body in such a way, that day-to-day activities and athletic endeavours become noticeably easier.  One tell-tale sign that you might have the wrong trainer working with you, is if you are getting injured on a regular basis, if your progress is not improving in a marked way or if certain muscle groups are big and over developed, while others are small and weak.  Should you find yourself in one of these situations, it may be time to change to a more competent wellness coach.
