10 Ways To Beat The Holiday Bulge

Holiday season is here.  Not only is it a time for friends and family, but it is also a season of indulgence and unrestrained passions.  For most of us, Christmas marks the ending of the year and thoughts of the coming new year.  And as many look back at their triumphs and failures over the past year, they often resolve to do better in the coming year.  This is often true for those who consider the state of their present health and wellness.

Realizing that they missed or didn’t even come close to maintaining a healthier lifestyle, a prompt decision is often made to act upon these goals post-holiday season.  However, until that time, they decide to just “enjoy themselves” until the beginning of the new year.  However, overindulgence and excessive eating and drinking can seriously put one at a disadvantage, come the new year.  To avoid excess this season, here are 10 things you can do to be healthier this holiday.

  1. Avoid eating and drinking late.  If you eat and drink sugary beverages before 8pm, it will decrease your chances of weight gain
  2. Get enough rest.  Those holiday parties can last until the wee hours of the morning, but a lack of sleep will not only result in weight gain but in a depressed immunity.
  3. Avoid alcoholic beverages.  Not only do alcoholic beverages contain copious amounts of sugar, but they cause your cancer cells to flourish and grow; not to mention the damage they do to the brain, kidneys, liver and veins.
  4. Limit your dessert intake.  There will a lot of tempting deserts and candies around this holiday season.  However, you can still enjoy a treat here or there, but try not to eat more of them than you normally would.
  5. Stop eating when you are full.  Many of us have friends and family who we visit house-to-house.  However, if you are offered food, be mindful that the body can only utilize so much food at a time.  Overeating not only will cause weight gain, but it places a strain upon the heart, liver, kidneys and blood.
  6. Avoid fatty foods.  While most of us love gravy, meats and cheeses, its best to limit or avoid these items due to the high fat content within them.
  7. Stay away from processed foods.  Cookies, cake, pies and other goodies from the store may seem tempting, but be mindful that they often contain ingredients which can promote weight gain.
  8. Eat a big healthy breakfast in the morning.  Eating a substantial breakfast not only will reduce your cravings throughout the day, but will fuel your body to perform at its best.  Eating breakfast actually will help you to lose or maintain weight!
  9. Continue to make time to exercise.  In order to make it easier to stay or get back onto the fitness wagon come the new year, its best that you maintain an exercise routine throughout the holiday season.  Because, it is more difficult to start exercise than it is to maintain an exercise program.
  10. Set your wellness goals before Christmas.  By doing this you will commit yourself to achieving them.  Write them down and place them where it would be visible to remind you.  Often people fail due to a lack of planning and preparation.  Don’t be one of them!
